KlimaOasen: Development of a resilient campus through Nature-based Solutions

The goal of this project is to facilitate exchange among participants that would like to initiate, implement, and maintain nature-based solutions (NBS) that act as ‘Climate Oases’ on the university campus, and thereby develop recommendations for the implementation of climate adaptation measures.

Project duration:  01/12/2022 – 31/03/2024
Funding: Stuttgarter Klima-Innovationsfond
Partners:  University of Stuttgart Green Office
Website:  KlimaOasen
Project lead ILPÖ:  Prof. Dr. Leonie Fischer

To the project

BiodivFassade

In this project, a system for green façades is being developed and investigated, which is intended to promote biodiversity in urban environments by planting selected plant species and supporting a high structural diversity. For this purpose, about 20 green façades in the region of Stuttgart will be analysed over two years with regard to different factors in order to investigate the effect of these façades on their surroundings.

Project duration:  01/04/2022 - 31/03/2025
Funding: Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Federal Office for Agriculture and Food
Partners: IABP, HELIX Pflanzensysteme GmbH
Project lead ILPÖ: Prof. Dr. Leonie Fischer
Ansprechpartner/-in: Dipl.-Ing. Eva Bender

To the project

Balancing and optimization of the multifunctional management of Central Asian juniper forests »JuniperCA«

JuniperCA deals with the optimization of forest management in one of the biodiversity hotspots worldwide, the Pamiro-Alay-System. Spatially, the project focusses on juniper stands in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. We conduct a juniper yield analysis, inventor sample sites and map the local juniper distribution based on remote sensing data. Socio-ecological research leads to a comprehensive understanding of existing juniper uses in space and time. A spatially explicit simulation model of the current juniper use and of possible future uses integrates the different parts of the project and allows for optimization within the forest management system.

Project duration: 03/2019 - 08/2022
Funding: BLE Forschung für internationale, nachhaltige Waldbewirtschaftung
Partners: HNEE, MSRI
Project lead ILPÖ: Dr. H.-G. Schwarz-v. Raumer

To the Project

»Rural Urban Nutrient Partnership (RUN)« Nährstoffgemeinschaften für eine zukunftsfähige Landwirtschaft

The project examines possibilities of regional closed-circuit nutrient and resource cycles (especially biological waste and domestic waste water) between urban residents and farmers, increasing the resilience and resource efficiency of agricultural systems. The project is coordinated by the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Waste Management (ISWA) and carried out by an interdisciplinary consortium of agricultural and engineering scientists, sociologists, system analysts, urban and landscape planners, engineers and municipal institutions. The ILPÖ is involved with aspects of spatial relationships and planning.
