International Mastercourse Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design

Since 2010, Prof. Dr. Philipp Misselwitz of the Institute for International Urbanism and Prof. Antje Stokman have worked together to develop the German-Egyptian “Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design” Master’s study programme. The English language study programme is jointly organised by the University of Stuttgart and Ain Shams University in Cairo. The first and second semesters are taught in Stuttgart, the third and fourth in Cairo together with external partners. The Master Thesis in the fourth semester is invigilated by both universities. The study programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). Funding for the period 2011–2017 totals approximately 2 million Euro. In October 2012, Antje Stokman took over from Philipp Misselwitz as course director of the study programme.

As part of the study programme, the ILPÖ teaches the mandatory module “Urban Ecology and Design” as well as the “Integrated Research and Design” module and the “Methods and Tools” mandatory module together with the Institute for International Urbanism. The institute also offers the specialisation module “GeoDesign” as well as other elective modules as seminars.
