As the culmination of a four-week workshop at our IRDII Summer Studio 2024 - Urban Trees as a Catalyst for Transformation in Stuttgart East, the students explored participatory urban planning methods and tested the strategy of 'Gaming as Intervention'. Through self-designed themed games, the students engaged local residents on issues such as urban climate warming and the importance of social connectedness.
The groups developed a variety of games to raise awareness of:
- The impact of green vs. grey streets
- Social and environmental connectivity
- Benefits of street greening
- Heat mitigation through natural shade
This workshop was inspired by the "Climate Community Street Play Games" developed by students of the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences under the guidance of Prof. Myriel Milicevic and game designer Ruttikorn Vuttikorn, who shared their knowledge and experience with us.
The implementation of these games was a great success and left us full of lessons on how to implement participatory strategies for social cohesion and activation of public space.
It was made possible by the cooperation of the Family and Meeting Centre Raitelsberg T-Rio 9a, the Centre for Intercultural Girls' Work (ZIMA) - IN VIA, the Local Initiative Wanderbaumallee Stuttgart and, of course, the enthusiastic participation of the residents of the Ostheim neighbourhood.
