On April 23rd the Institute of Landscape Planning and Ecology led a workshop for Girls Day 2026 called Our Leafy Neighbors: Exploring Trees in the City and Beyond. In this workshop, eleven 5th and 6th graders experienced what it’s like to be an urban nature researcher for a day. They learned about trees and how to identify some common species, before testing their new knowledge in the field by characterizing trees and their immediate environmental characteristics (i.e. pH, surface temperature) on Campus Vaihingen and in the nearby Pfaffenwald forest. Back in the classroom we collectively visualized the data the girls collected and reflected on the process and possible conclusions.
