Launch of IRD II Summer Term Studio 2024: Urban Trees as a Catalyst for Transformation in Stuttgart East

April 16, 2024

We are pleased to announce the successful start of our Integrated Research and Design II (IRD II) Summer Studio 2024 for the M.Sc. Programme in Integrated Urbanism & Sustainable Design (IUSD). This studio focuses on an integrated design project in one of Stuttgart´s inner-city districts, Stuttgart East. It is a collaboration between the Institute of Landscape Planning and Ecology (ILPÖ) and the Institute of Urban Planning and Design (SI) at the University of Stuttgart and the Local Initiative Wanderbaumallee Stuttgart.

The project will address ecological and environmental challenges through the lens of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Tactical Urbanism, specifically contextualised for Stuttgart East. This district is characterised by a dense urban structure, with mid-rise buildings and a high percentage of sealed surfaces and materials, but it´s also an area undergoing a rapid transformation from industrial to residential and commercial districts, which is attracting economic interest and offering potential opportunities to improve the quality of urban spaces with blue and green infrastructure.
In partnership with the ´District Council of Stuttgart-East and led by an interdisciplinary team of professors specialising in urban ecology and urban planning, we will analyse and enhance the existing blue-green infrastructure, taking into account its ecological and social significance.
Through participatory analysis and a range of activities - including an excursion to Berlin, a workshop on community gaming as an intervention, and local workshops and visits with local stakeholders - we aim to develop visionary concepts to improve urban quality and public accessibility in Stuttgart East in the long term.
