We have successfully completed our mid-term presentation day! The students of the Winter Studio - Coastal Cities: Planning and Design for Urban Ecosystems in Portugal, presented their mid-term results, an ambitious vision for the future of Aveiro from a social-ecological perspective.
After an in-depth and rigorous analysis of the city from several thematic angles, we reflected together on the main social and environmental challenges and opportunities that the students wanted to address in Aveiro. This process led to the creation of a compelling written and visual narrative that imagines an ideal future where these challenges are overcome through ecological planning principles.
The outcomes speak for themselves. Through collages, comics, diagrams, maps, and stories, the students have illustrated a wide range of possibilities for Aveiro’s future. Their visions explore themes such as ecological connectivity and integration with nature, the revitalization of underused spaces through green transformation, climate risk mitigation strategies, and the urban regeneration of sub-centers.
These mid-term results mark the beginning of a design phase, laying the foundation for the development of strategies that will help shape a greener, more resilient Aveiro. Nature-Based Solutions, among other approaches, will play a key role in creating a city that embraces ecological principles for a better future.
