We have just concluded our five-day excursion in Portugal! During the trip, we explored the cities of Lisbon and Aveiro, where students gained valuable insights into the challenges of cities facing terrestrial-marine transition ecosystems.
In Lisbon, we engaged in a lecture exchange at the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), where practitioners and experts provided us with useful perspectives on the current challenges faced by coastal areas and the key adaptation strategies being implemented. In Lisbon, we also walked along one of the city's main and most central ecological corridors, which connects Monsanto Forest Park to Eduardo VII Park and Avenida da Liberdade in the city centre.
In Aveiro, students applied observational and data collection methodologies using both participatory and non-participatory approaches tailored to their specific sites of interest. After several intensive fieldwork sessions and visits to nearby ecosystems, such as the saltpans and salt marshes, led by Dr. Ana Sousa of the University of Aveiro, we were able to analyse and discuss the key challenges and opportunities identified throughout our research.
Our excursion concluded with presentations, discussions, and even an improvisation exercise with students from the Masters program in Regional and Urban Planning at the University of Aveiro. This final session allowed us to reflect on our fieldwork findings before heading into the semester break.
