Topic
Within their international year 10 students of Stuttgart University can join an international research project of ILPÖ on the future of Megacities coping with climate change - Concepts for Lima Metropolitana (Perú) – (LiWa). Together with many project partners from other faculties, universities, NGOs, public institutions and the private sector in Germany and Perú we are aiming at sustainable planning and water management strategies of one of the crucial lifelines – water and sanitation. Lima is one of the world´s second driest megacities. Water supply is mainly from its small rivers that are shaping green valleys in the mountainous desert. However due to fast uncontrolled urbanisation, water extraction and sewage disposal these rivers are loosing their vital function of serving as a green infrastructure for the metropolitan area.
Task
Within this studio project we will develop strategies for an ecological river park along river Chillón that are not simply based on a park image design - but on a park performance design. How can a river park combine natural ecological processes, the cultural experience of water in the city and at the same time support the proper functioning of Lima´s water infrastructure system? In cooperation with a student group from Lima the German students will develop a proposal for a pilot project that should be implemented as a result of the LiWa project. An international summerschool/ excursion to Lima in March and internship in the LiWa-project in the summer term will build up on the results of the studio and involve the students in the further process of the project. English and Spanish language skills are required (courses offered by international office in winter term).
