Mai A. Marzouk, a doctoral candidate at ILPÖ, has successfully published her PhD dissertation as an open-access document in the OPUS repository – the Online Publications of the University of Stuttgart. Her research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Leonie K. Fischer and Prof. Mohamed A. Salheen and followed a cumulative (article-based) format.

Figure 1: Productive Building Systems (PBSs) included in the research scope.

Titled “Productive Building Systems in the Residential Sector in Egypt: An Investigation into the Implementation Potential of Greening and Solar Energy Systems in New Cities,” the dissertation investigated the implementation potential of Productive Building Systems (PBSs) in the understudied context of new residential buildings in Egypt. Influenced by implementation science theories, three priority dimensions—technical, social, and behavioral—were investigated through a mixed-method approach to address several gaps in theory and practice.

The findings address:

  • Technical aspects: A literature review and technical framework outlining PBS types and their implementation requirements.
  • Social acceptance: Analyzing preferences and perceptions of potential consumers.
  • Behavioral influences: Investigating socio-psychological factors that shape social acceptance and adoption.

By comparing greening and solar energy systems under Egypt’s current conditions, the dissertation provides concrete recommendations for stakeholders to promote PBS adoption. The insights are also relevant for countries with similar climatic and socio-economic contexts, contributing to the development of more sustainable, resource-efficient, and livable urban environments.
