Last week our IUSD Intake 13 had their final presentation of their Integrated Research and Design II (IRD II) project. For this year's integrated project, Stuttgart East served as the case study. Focusing on ecological and environmental challenges coupled with concerns for socially inclusive urban development, the students developed five comprehensive strategies for the future of the district and concluded with in-depth projects for selected areas.
The studio recognised that space is scarce and competitive in dense inner-city neighbourhoods, but that healthy, active, blue-green public gathering places support resilient urban development and thus move the planning process forward. The concepts of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and Tactical Urbanism have been contextualised in Stuttgart East to demonstrate step-by-step transformation.
The students proposed short, medium and long-term strategies and interventions in the district to address the most pressing environmental challenges in the area, such as improving access to public green spaces, increasing biodiversity, mitigating heat flows in buildings and streets, and restoring ecological connectivity.
Each summer term, IRD II Studio brings together expertise from the disciplines of urban ecology and urban planning and is taught jointly by the Institute of Landscape Planning and Ecology (ILPÖ) and the Institute of Urban Planning and Design (SI) at the University of Stuttgart. This year we also had the great opportunity to work with Wanderbaumallee Stuttgart, a local initiative that transforms streets into temporary green boulevards to create meeting places in local neighbourhoods using mobile trees.
