As part of the Annual Exhibition 2024, the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart honoured outstanding thesis projects from the last two semesters (summer 2023 and winter 2023/24). Among the winners, Angie, supervised by Prof. Dr. Leonie Fischer and Dr. Hans-Georg Schwarz-von Raumer from the Institute of Landscape Planning and Ecology, was awarded the prize for the best Master's thesis with a research focus.
Angie's thesis, entitled 'Valuation and Collective Action for Biodiversity along the Fucha River in Bogotá, Colombia', explores the differences in valuation and citizen action around an urban river where urban dynamics and ecosystem quality are highly variable.
Her research, which involved engagement with local citizens and environmental collectives, used a mixed-methods approach to provide valuable insights into how people value different biodiversity scenarios. The thesis also highlights the crucial role of collective action in preserving, enhancing and positively influencing urban ecosystems.
This research is particularly relevant in urban areas, especially in the Global South, where there is an urgent need to understand the relationship between citizens and nature. Such research is crucial in addressing the major challenges of biodiversity conservation, which often intersect with social inequalities and environmental conflicts.
